Laying Down Stones

Laying Down Stones

Throughout Scripture it was a common practice to lay down some stones and build an altar at a place where God had met His people and worked in power.  Then when children, grandchildren or even great-grandchildren would pass that place and ask, “Why are these stones here?  What is this altar for?” – they could be reminded of the story of God’s faithfulness to His people in that location. Our lives should really be no different.  Whether small encounters with God…

The Medicine of Community

The Medicine of Community

In the big picture, we are still in the infantile stages of our journey.  Even when the cast comes off (hopefully in less than 6 weeks), Cole will still have a long road ahead as he will go through physical therapy to retrain and strengthen his muscles and figure out how to walk again – prayerfully without his infamous limp!  All the while, perthes will still be in process.  Our prayer is that in the final phase of perthes, his…

Celebrating Victories

Celebrating Victories

Everyone loves to win.  That’s why World Cup Soccer makes no sense.  I mean, a tie… really!?  Anyhow, in this journey we find ourselves on, we’ve already decided that we would celebrate the victories – whether big or small.  Honestly, celebrating isn’t too difficult in the life of a five year old, but it is a bit challenging in the current circumstances.  The days can be long and slow and the pace of Cole’s normal life has changed radically.  We’ve…

What’s Next?

What’s Next?

We have settled into our room here at Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital.  Needless to say, it’s been a long day.  Cole has really done well.  Right now he is trying to rest and the pain seems managed.  He has had a few meltdowns – one in recovery and then one with us here in his room.  It’s hard to tell if it is frustration or pain, but we think it is frustration.  He wants out of the cast already and asked…

We’re here!

We’re here!

We’ve arrived at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. We have a 9a (CST) scheduled surgery time. Of course, we’d be more than okay with being discharged due to a miraculous healing! But either way, join us in praying that God’s name would be made great and His plans would prevail in Cole’s life. Pray for Dr. Killian and his team this morning. Pray for our peace and comfort and that our faith would be made strong in trusting the mighty hand of…

The Crossroads of Prayer

The Crossroads of Prayer

“More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of” – Tennyson That quote often finds itself stuck somewhere between my head and my heart.  Intellectually and theologically I know it to be true.  And in some of the lowest valleys and highest mountaintop moments in my life my heart has found it to be true.  And here we as a family find ourselves at a crossroads between our heads and our hearts. I mean, how do you exactly…

Curves in the Road of Life

Curves in the Road of Life

We all want a journey that is safe and predictable.  A road that seems well travelled and easy to navigate.  No sheer cliffs or harrowing turns.  Sounds like Interstate 10 here in Florida, yet it is one of the most boring roads to travel.  The great missionary, David Livingstone said… “If you have men who will only come if they know there is a good road, I don’t want them. I want men who will come if there is no…
